Alcon announced the initial commercial launch of the Unity M premium surgical microscope in select markets, including the United States and Japan, with a European launch to follow. The company will feature the new microscope at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress September 11-15 in London.

Unity M is the third addition to Alcon’s Unity surgical platform, following Unity VCS and Unity CS. The microscope combines optical and illumination technologies with a modular architecture designed to allow ophthalmic practices to configure the system according to their clinical needs and add upgrades over time.

“The idea behind the Unity platform is to develop clinic-based and operating room equipment solutions with a seamless user experience that improve surgical workflows,” Ian Bell, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Alcon, said in a statement. “By partnering closely with eye care professionals to understand their most significant unmet needs, we developed Unity M to provide a flexible, future-ready visualization platform that gives surgeons precise control and personalization in the operating room.”

According to Alcon, the Unity M base model incorporates 3 principal visualization features: an expanded red reflex zone, color-tunable illumination, and a depth of field optimized for ophthalmic surgery.

Alcon said the microscope provides a red reflex zone up to 6 times larger than that of the Zeiss Artevo. The company said the red reflex is designed to remain stable as the eye moves, helping surgeons maintain visualization across different pupil sizes and microscope positions.

The microscope also incorporates what Alcon describes as the first color-tunable illumination system for a surgical microscope. The technology allows illumination to be adjusted to enhance contrast and visualization of tissue details compared with traditional illumination systems.

Unity M's depth of field is optimized for ophthalmic procedures and designed to maintain visualization of ocular structures as the eye shifts during surgery.

“Visualization is fundamental to every procedure I perform because it directly impacts the level of control I have throughout surgery,” Eric Rosenberg, MD, of SightMD in Long Island, New York, said in the announcement. “During critical moments of a case, having a stable view helps me operate with confidence and precision. The combination of a stable red reflex, advanced illumination and enhanced depth of field provides the visualization I need to maintain control from one stage of surgery to the next, while the platform's flexibility allows me to tailor the system to my specific preferences.”

Alcon designed Unity M as a modular system that can be configured for both anterior and posterior segment surgeons. Purpose-built options can be selected according to a practice's needs, with additional modular upgrades incorporated as those needs change. The microscope is also designed for current and future integration with Alcon's broader portfolio of equipment, digital technologies, and services.

The company said additional Unity M modules are planned as it continues to develop the Unity ecosystem.

Unity M has received regulatory approvals in the United States, Canada, Japan, India, and Europe, including CE marking. Alcon said inventory will begin shipping in September.

The microscope will be displayed at Alcon's booth C231 at ExCeL London during ESCRS. The company will also discuss the platform during its “Unity Surgical Platform – From Vision to Impact in Clinical Practice” symposium on September 13 at 9:30 am.
