EssilorLuxottica has announced a strategic partnership with the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research and education in ocular surface health.

For over two decades, TFOS has elevated awareness of external eye diseases, supporting research funding, and driving advancements in diagnostics, treatments, and clinical practices. According to EssilorLuxottica, by joining forces with TFOS, the company aims to further strengthen its leadership in the field while contributing to impactful global research and professional education programs.

A key focus of the partnership is the expansion of initiatives such as the TFOS Ambassador Program, which promotes awareness and understanding of ocular surface health among healthcare professionals worldwide.

The collaboration comes at a time when ocular surface disease—particularly dry eye disease—is gaining recognition as a critical factor in clinical outcomes. Increasing evidence shows that untreated ocular surface conditions can compromise preoperative measurements, elevate the risk of postoperative complications, and negatively affect visual performance and patient satisfaction.

To address these challenges, EssilorLuxottica is sponsoring the development of a new evidence-based consensus report titled “Guidelines for Preparing the Ocular Surface for Eye Surgery.” The report will bring together a global panel of experts to establish standardized perioperative care protocols across a wide range of procedures, including cataract, refractive, glaucoma, retina, and oculoplastic surgeries.

The initiative is expected to harmonize clinical practices and raise the global standard of care, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

The partnership also builds on contributions from Espansione Group, which became part of EssilorLuxottica in 2025. Espansione Group recently played an active role in TFOS’ Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) III Report, a global reference for understanding and managing dry eye disease and ocular surface conditions. The report featured the company’s flagship product, eye-light.

TFOS reports, including previous DEWS publications, are considered foundational resources in the scientific community, reaching hundreds of thousands of eye care professionals worldwide.
