Topcon Healthcare has received CE mark approval for GAIA, a fully automated ultra-widefield retinal imaging device designed to capture a 209° field of view in a single image.
According to the company, the non-contact, non-mydriatic system delivers true-color ultra-widefield fundus imaging while emphasizing ease of use through automated alignment and a compact, user-friendly design. The expanded field of view is intended to improve visualization of the peripheral retina, supporting the detection and management of retinal disease.
“GAIA represents Topcon’s response to the increasing prevalence of retinal disease that requires a wider field of view than the traditional fundus cameras, enabling better visualisation of the peripheral retina, which may support early disease detection and management,” said Hideyuki Takizawa, president of Topcon's Eye Care Business Division. “With GAIA, Topcon solidifies its leadership in the fundus camera market.”
Topcon plans to begin commercial availability of GAIA across the European Union in the coming weeks following the CE mark approval. The company also plans to showcase the device during the 44th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), scheduled for Sept. 11-15, 2026, at ExCeL London in the United Kingdom.
