Key Takeaways

  • Luminopia has licensed Spin Master programming, including Paw Patrol, Unicorn Academy, Vida the Vet, and Bakugan, for use within its FDA-cleared digital therapeutic for pediatric amblyopia
  • The additional content expands the company's library of entertainment available through its virtual reality-based treatment, which is designed to encourage binocular vision without traditional eye patching

Luminopia has entered into a content licensing agreement with children's entertainment company Spin Master to expand the library of programming available through its FDA-cleared prescription digital therapeutic for pediatric amblyopia.

Under the agreement, pediatric patients using Luminopia's virtual reality-based treatment platform will gain access to several Spin Master series, including Paw Patrol, Unicorn Academy, Vida the Vet, and Bakugan. The additional programming is intended to provide more age-appropriate entertainment options for children undergoing therapy.

Luminopia's prescription digital therapeutic is designed as an alternative to traditional eye-patching for amblyopia (lazy eye). Rather than requiring children to cover their stronger eye, the therapy uses a virtual reality headset to present modified visual content that encourages both eyes to work together. The FDA-cleared treatment is prescribed for 1 hour per day, 6 days per week.

Amblyopia is the leading cause of vision loss in children and affects an estimated one million pediatric patients in the United States. Conventional treatment has historically relied on patching the stronger eye for several hours each day, an approach that can interfere with school, sports, and other daily activities and may present adherence challenges for some families.

According to Luminopia, expanding its entertainment catalog is intended to help improve the treatment experience by offering children access to familiar programming during prescribed therapy sessions.

"This partnership enhances our growing content library with programming that children already know and love," said Scott Xiao, founder and CEO of Luminopia. "Access to familiar, age-appropriate entertainment can play an important role in helping families stay engaged during treatment, and Spin Master's loved characters and stories are a natural fit for our patient population."

Luminopia said its digital therapeutic is currently prescribed at eye institutes, children's hospitals, and private ophthalmology practices throughout the United States. Parents and caregivers interested in the treatment are encouraged to consult their eye care provider to determine whether it is appropriate for eligible pediatric patients.
