Lumibird Medical announced the launch of Astral, a contactless selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) platform incorporating OCT visualization, at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress 2026.
The platform combines anterior chamber OCT imaging with lens-free, transscleral SLT delivery and is designed to help clinicians visualize and target the trabecular meshwork during glaucoma laser treatment.
According to Lumibird Medical, Astral can generate up to 120 radial cross-sectional views of the anterior chamber, providing anatomical information at individual treatment locations. The OCT visualization is integrated into the treatment workflow to assist clinicians in identifying and targeting the trabecular meshwork.
The system uses a transscleral approach that does not require a gonioscopy lens or coupling gel. Lumibird Medical said the contactless design is intended to simplify treatment delivery and improve the treatment experience for patients and clinicians.
Astral is also designed to deliver 360° laser treatment in less than 3 seconds, according to the company. Lumibird Medical noted that total procedure time will vary depending on the clinician and workflow.
The platform's software guides clinicians through a 5-stage process—Align, Focus, Acquire, Target, and Deliver—with the goal of supporting precise and confluent SLT delivery.
“Astral represents a major advance in glaucoma laser therapy,” Jean-Marc Gendre, CEO of Lumibird Medical, said in the announcement. “By integrating OCT visualization directly into the SLT treatment workflow, we empower clinicians with greater anatomical confidence, procedural efficiency, and treatment precision.”
Lumibird Medical also highlighted early clinical experience with the technology. Robert Casson, MBBS (Hons), M.Biostat, DPhil, FRANZCO, principal investigator of the Astral pilot study, said initial experience with the platform has been encouraging.

SLT has increasingly been used as a first-line treatment option for glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Astral was developed to support this treatment approach by improving reproducibility, simplifying treatment delivery, and facilitating patient throughput, according to Lumibird Medical.
The Astral laser is CE-marked.
