Lumibird Medical has completed its acquisition of long-time distribution partner Biz Medic Sdn Bhd, establishing a direct commercial presence in Southeast Asia through the launch of Lumibird Medical Southeast Asia, effective July 1, 2026. The move marks the company's transition from a distributor-based model to a wholly owned regional subsidiary as it expands its ophthalmic business across the Asia-Pacific market.
Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the new organization is expected to serve as Lumibird Medical's primary growth hub for Southeast Asia, supporting sales, service, clinical training and customer support for ophthalmologists and surgeons throughout the region.
According to Lumibird, the acquisition builds on a relationship spanning more than two decades. Biz Medic has served as Lumibird Medical's distribution partner since 2004, providing local market expertise and customer relationships that the company said will now be integrated with its global resources and product portfolio.
Lumibird says the investment reflects the growing importance of Southeast Asia as an ophthalmic market, driven by rising rates of myopia, glaucoma and retinal disease, alongside increasing healthcare investment and expanding access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
"The creation of Lumibird Medical Southeast Asia marks an important milestone in our Asia-Pacific strategy," Jean-Marc Gendre, director of Lumibird Medical, said in a company statement. "By establishing this office, we are moving closer to our customers and patients, ensuring that our life-changing technologies are supported by a world-class regional service center."
The new regional hub will oversee distribution of the company's Quantel Medical, Optotek Medical and Ellex product portfolios under a unified organizational structure. Lumibird Medical said the consolidation is intended to strengthen its regional brand presence while addressing the regulatory and clinical requirements unique to Southeast Asian markets.
