Tecnis PureSee IOL addresses both cataract-related vision loss and presbyopia in a single surgical procedure
The FDA has approved Johnson & Johnson's Tecnis PureSee extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL. The company said the lens will become available to patients in the United States later this year.
The Tecnis PureSee IOL is intended to improve visual clarity following cataract surgery while minimizing visual disturbances. In clinical results cited by Johnson & Johnson, 97% of patients reported no "very bothersome" visual disturbances after receiving the lens.1
“Today marks an exciting milestone for people living with cataracts,” said Peter Menziuso, Company Group Chairman, Vision, Johnson & Johnson. “The approval of the Tecnis PureSee IOL gives surgeons an important new lens option, reflecting our deep commitment to innovation that delivers high patient satisfaction and supports vision solutions tailored to individual lifestyle needs.”
The Tecnis PureSee IOL is designed to address both cataract-related vision loss and presbyopia. In a single procedure, the lens provides extended depth of focus to support clear vision at multiple distances.
According to J&J, Tecnis PureSee IOL is the first and only FDA-approved EDOF intraocular lens without a warning related to loss of contrast sensitivity.1 Traditional aspheric monofocal lenses are considered the benchmark for preserving contrast sensitivity. The company says Tecnis PureSee IOL maintains contrast sensitivity comparable to those lenses while also delivering an extended range of vision.
Built on the long-standing Tecnis lens platform, the new IOL combines advanced optical design with proprietary material technology. The lens offers strong distance and intermediate vision with some near-vision capability, helping reduce patients’ dependence on glasses after surgery.

The Tecnis lineup now includes:
-
Tecnis PureSee IOL – a purely refractive extended depth of focus lens
-
Tecnis Odyssey IOL – a Full Visual Range (FVR) IOL
-
Tecnis Eyhance IOL – a monofocal lens designed to slightly extend depth of focus
Tecnis PureSee IOL has already received approval in markets worldwide, and nearly half a million eyes globally have been treated with the lens, according to the company.
