Given that scleral contact lenses can manage corneal conditions, such as keratoconus, and treat dry eye disease effectively, it makes sense for ODs to be aware of the latest related innovations to continue to meet these patients’ vision and comfort needs. This is where the International Congress of Scleral Contacts (ICSC) comes in, according to program chairs Brooke Messer, OD, FAAO, FSLS; John Gelles, OD, FAAO, FIAO, FCLSA, FSLS, FBCLA; and Ariel Cerenzie, OD, FAAO, FSLS. This year’s event will occur June 5-6, in San Diego.
“ICSC connects those at the forefront of scleral lens fitting with the providers who want to further advance their skills,” explains Dr. Messer. “The collaboration between experts and industry can stimulate new ideas for the next generation of scleral lens design.”
Dr. Gelles adds that the meeting offers educational opportunities for novices to experts. “Fitting scleral lenses requires specialized knowledge and skill,” he points out. “Whether you want to hone your skills or simply become aware of scleral lens applications and how they can help your patients, ICSC is for you.”
Specifically, ICSC education spans cutting-edge technology, new fitting philosophies, and emerging innovations, while also addressing real-world topics, such as practice management, insurance hurdles, and workflow efficiency, according to Dr. Cerenzie.
“This education allows optometrists to manage increasingly complex patients, while building strong, trust-based comanagement relationships with surgeons,” she explains. “Both are central to the future of eye care and delivering the best patient outcomes.”
