Heru announced the US launch of PretestPro, a new software capability for its Heru Prime wearable platform designed to perform 4 ophthalmic pretest examinations in approximately 90 seconds.

According to the company, PretestPro will be provided at no additional charge to current and future Heru Prime customers through an automatic software update.

The technology uses virtual reality and eye tracking to combine several pretesting assessments into a single guided workflow and generate a consolidated, quantitative report. PretestPro performs an 8-point suprathreshold assessment, near cover test, extraocular motility (EOM) assessment, and quantitative pupillometry, including relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) and PERRLA status.

“PretestPro isn’t just a faster test. It is a fundamentally different way to structure the diagnostic workflow,” Mohamed Abou Shousha, MD, PhD, founder and CEO of Heru and professor of clinical ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said in a news release. “Traditional pretesting requires multiple devices and several manual steps. PretestPro consolidates these tests into a single wearable exam that runs about three times faster than traditional testing.”

During testing, patients maintain fixation using Nora, Heru’s patient-guided fixation target. Heru said the underlying virtual reality and eye-tracking modalities have been evaluated in peer-reviewed research.

Practices can also add the platform's visual acuity test, which requires approximately another 30 seconds. According to Heru, the combination allows clinicians to complete about half of their pretesting workflow in approximately 2 minutes.

The company said the approach is intended to reduce reliance on multiple pieces of diagnostic equipment and manual testing while improving workflow consistency. Because Heru Prime is portable, testing can be performed in pretest areas, waiting rooms, or remote settings.

In addition to PretestPro, the Heru Prime platform supports several vision assessments, including suprathreshold visual field testing; full-threshold 24-2, 10-2, and 30-2 visual fields; Esterman visual field testing; visual acuity; Ishihara color vision testing; near and distance cover testing; quantitative pupillometry; and EOM assessment.
