Bausch + Lomb announced the publication of new real-world research evaluating visual and refractive outcomes with its enVista Aspire and enVista Aspire toric IOLs in patients undergoing cataract surgery.1

The multicenter retrospective study, published in Ophthalmology and Therapy, found that the enhanced monofocal IOLs provided good distance vision as well as functional intermediate vision. The findings add real-world evidence to previous clinical data supporting the intermediate-optimized optics of the enVista Aspire platform.

“Traditional monofocal lenses offer good distance vision, but we know that cataract patients have an increased need and desire for good intermediate vision, particularly given the digital demands of our modern world,” Luc Bonnefoy, president, Surgical, Bausch + Lomb, said in a company announcement. “The results of this study reinforce clinical data showing that the intermediate optimized optics of the enVista Aspire platform, which are designed for a broader depth of focus, can deliver both.”

Six US cataract surgeons contributed cases and completed a retrospective experience survey assessing corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), refractive outcomes, and safety. The analysis included 84 patients and 141 eyes, of which 88 received an enVista Aspire IOL and 53 received an enVista Aspire toric IOL.

Among eyes implanted with enVista Aspire, 97.2% achieved monocular CDVA of 20/25 or better at the last reported follow-up visit. Additionally, 71.3% achieved monocular UDVA of 20/25 or better, and 76.6% achieved monocular UIVA of 20/32 or better.

Results were similar in the enVista Aspire toric group. At the last reported follow-up, 94.9% of eyes achieved monocular CDVA of 20/25 or better, 84.9% achieved monocular UDVA of 20/25 or better, and 93% achieved monocular UIVA of 20/32 or better.

Across both groups, 100% of patients achieved binocular UIVA of 20/32 or better. No serious adverse events were reported.

“The results of clinical studies involving enVista Aspire lenses have been clear, but real-world data has thus far been limited,” said Eric Donnenfeld, MD, lead author of the study and an ophthalmologist with Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut. “The outcomes reported in this study not only mirror what I’ve seen in my practice, they also provide evidence that the intermediate optimized optic is indeed having the intended effect in clinical practice.”

The enVista Aspire platform is designed to extend the range of vision of a monofocal IOL beyond distance and into the intermediate range. The lenses also incorporate Bausch + Lomb’s glistening-free optic material and StableFlex technology, which is designed to support controlled unfolding and optic recovery during implantation.

For patients with astigmatism, the enVista Aspire toric platform combines the intermediate-optimized optic with astigmatic correction. According to Bausch + Lomb, the toric platform includes a low-cylinder option beginning at +1.25 D in the United States and +0.90 D at the IOL plane in markets outside the United States. Its AccuSet haptic design is intended to provide rotational stability following implantation.
