AEYE Health, developer of AEYE-DS device for diabetic eye exams, announced the nationwide expansion of its integration with the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) platforms.

According to AEYE Health, the integration is purpose-built for portable AI screening and allows healthcare providers to order diabetic retinopathy (DR) exams and receive results in real time—directly within the Epic EMR. With results delivered in under 1 minute and no disruption to existing clinical workflows, providers can now perform diabetic eye screenings during routine visits.

Already deployed across dozens of hospitals and healthcare systems using Epic, the integration enables primary care providers, endocrinologists, and diabetes centers to conduct on-the-spot diabetic eye exams without physician interpretation. The solution helps close major care gaps, supports HEDIS quality measures, and is fully reimbursable under CPT code 92229—the first AI-specific reimbursement code established in the United States, AEYE Health stated.

Through the streamlined workflow, clinicians can order an AI diabetic retinopathy exam directly from the patient’s chart. A nurse or medical assistant captures a single retinal image per eye using a portable camera integrated with AEYE-DS. Within seconds, results are automatically returned to the patient’s medical record. If signs of disease are detected, an automated alert is sent to ophthalmology to ensure timely follow-up. From order placement to results delivery, the entire process takes less than 1 minute. The integration also supports full automation of billing for reimbursement codes and care gap reporting.

“This enhanced integration makes diabetic retinopathy screening in Epic faster and more seamless than ever,” said Zack Dvey-Aharon, PhD, co-founder and CEO of AEYE Health. “With an exam completed in under 1 minute and everything being automated, healthcare providers can focus on what is really important and deliver fast and accurate AI retinal screening right at the point of care. Adoption is accelerating rapidly across hospitals and clinics, bringing AEYE-DS to patients nationwide and preventing vision loss.”

AEYE Health currently supports multiple major EMR platforms and continues to expand its integrations.
