AcuSurgical has appointed ophthalmic industry veteran Pierre Billardon as chairman of its board of directors, effective July 1, 2026. The announcement comes as the company advances development of its LUCA robotic platform for vitreoretinal surgery.
Mr. Billardon brings more than 30 years of experience in ophthalmology, including executive leadership roles across the surgical device sector. Most recently, he served as chief executive officer of DORC (Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center), where he oversaw a period of international expansion culminating in the company's acquisition by Zeiss. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership positions at Alcon, Carl Zeiss and Human Optics.
According to AcuSurgical, Mr. Billardon's background spans vitreoretinal surgery, ophthalmic technology and global medical device strategy. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with retinal surgeons, clinical teams and industry partners, contributing to the commercialization of specialized ophthalmic surgical technologies.
His appointment comes as the France-based company continues development of LUCA, a robotic platform designed to assist vitreoretinal surgery. AcuSurgical said it is now focused on expanding the clinical evidence supporting LUCA following recent clinical milestones and preparing the technology for its next phase of development.
