Implantation of the iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass in conjunction with cataract surgery is associated with reduced need for glaucoma eyedrops, according to a new study.

“Our results suggest that for certain groups of patients, such as those with glaucoma who are taking one or more glaucoma medications and undergoing cataract surgery, concurrent iStent implantation may be a way to lower their glaucoma medication burden,” Dr. Sophia Y. Wang from Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California, told Reuters Health by email.

Clinical trials of iStent have reported intraocular pressure (IOP) reductions between 8% and 17%, along with 1.1 to 1.6 fewer medications used postoperatively.
