Dr. Holmes currently serves as the Joseph E. and Rose Marie Green Professor of Visual Sciences and professor of ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He has served as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology for an 8-year term, where he was responsible for recruiting a dozen new faculty.

“We are truly excited to have Dr. Holmes on board. I would like to thank the search committee, and everyone else who has been involved in this rigorous recruitment process,” Michael Abecassis, MD, MBA, dean of the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, said in a company news release.

He has additional NIH funding to develop patient-reported outcome measures across the spectrum of childhood eye conditions. Dr. Holmes is also an internationally recognized strabismus surgeon and his surgical practice focuses on complex ocular misalignment and double vision in both children and adults.
Dr. Holmes is originally from Leamington Spa, England, and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Cambridge University. He completed his medical degree at Oxford University Medical School and went on to conduct his residency in ophthalmology at Loyola University Chicago, followed by a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

“This is a very exciting time to be joining the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner – University Medicine,” Dr. Holmes said. “It is an honor and privilege to be joining Dean Michael Abecassis’ team.”
