Jim Mazzo, senior vice president, Abbott Medical Optics (AMO), announced his plans to retire from AMO at the end of the year. The news was shared internally at AMO headquarters on Thursday. Mr. Mazzo will be replaced by Murthy Simhambhatla, PhD, head of Abbott's Ibis Biosciences business.
Mr. Mazzo was appointed to his current role in February 2009 following Abbott's acquisition of Advanced Medical Optics. Prior to that, he served as chairman and CEO of Advanced Medical Optics. He also held various senior executive level positions for Allergan prior to its spin-off of Advanced Medical Optics, including president of Allergan's Europe/Africa/Middle East region. He recently completed his term as chairman of AdvaMed.
Dr. Simhambhatla has held a succession of management positions at Guidant Corp. Before leading Ibis, Dr. Simhambhatla served as general manager of the Abbott's vascular business in Australia, and as divisional vice president and general manager of Abbott's drug-eluting stent business.
